Chinas, Not the Hardiest BunchAs one might guess, these roses originally derived from China, where it is thought that they existed as early as the tenth century, possibly before. They were used extensively in hybridisation programmes when they became largely responsible for the long flowering period of most of today’s modern roses. Very free flowering, they come in a wide range of colours and many are perfumed. They can be used as bedding in mixed or even specimen planting but it must be remembered that they are not the hardiest of roses and will need protection in colder areas. In places where it is just too cold to grow them they make rewarding Greenhouse or Conservatory plants.
